Retention

After braces are removed teeth will tend to go back into misalignment if they are not held in position. Retainers are used to hold the teeth and keep them straight. If a retainer is glued on the inside surface of the teeth, it is called a fixed retainer. Removable retainers allow for easier cleaning of the teeth. Following are some common retainer questions.

How much should I wear my retainers?
Full time retainer wear is recommended the first 6-8 weeks after removal of the braces. Full time means day and night except when eating and brushing. For the remainder of the first year following orthodontic treatment, most patients need a minimum of 12-14 hours per day to maintain alignment of their teeth. After a year, retainers can usually be worn just when sleeping. Every night is ideal, but you should never wear them less than every other night. Some patients will require more retainer wear so check with us at your retainer visits to see what is recommended for you. You know you are wearing your retainer enough if your teeth are staying straight and the retainers fit well. If your teeth move or your retainer is too tight, you are not wearing them enough. We encourage lifetime retainer wear to maintain alignment of your teeth.

Will I come to the orthodontic office to check my retainers?
YES! We usually check your retainers at about six weeks, five months, and twelve months after the braces are off. If you have a concern between scheduled visits, please let us know and we will see you. Make sure to bring your retainers with you to each visit.

How do I clean my retainers?
Brush it with a toothbrush and rinse it off when you take it out each morning. Hot water or other heat can distort the retainer. A little water or mouthwash in your retainer case will keep the retainer from drying out and give it a fresh taste.

What should I do if I lose or break a retainer?
A lost or broken retainer is not an emergency, but you should see us within a couple of days for a repair or replacement. If you go too long without your teeth may move. Repairing a retainer is often not possible and a new impression of the teeth is needed to make a replacement retainer. Cost is about $200 per retainer for replacement. Keep retainers in their case when you are not wearing them to avoid damage or loss.

How long should a retainer last?
With proper care the average life of a retainer is 2-3 years. Poor care can reduce that time significantly and excellent care may extend it. When your retainer wears out it is important to get a new one promptly to prevent tooth movement.
